Masterclasses at Northlands in Lybster provided inspiration and opened the door to new techniques. After completing an MA in Glass at the University of Sunderland in 2016 my passion for glass has continued. I have followed up my favourite themes of the seashore, mountains and the natural world. Experiments combining rusty metal and found have led to an unconventional body of work, that is strongly influenced by the 19th century love of collecting and classifying. I enjoy exploring variations on a theme, using the casting technique to produce glass cockles, limpets and whelks in many different colours and sizes, cast from shells collected on Northumbrian, Scottish and Irish coasts.
Thanks to the help of Joanne Mitchell and the water jet cutter at the University of Sunderland I have produced masses of whalebone shapes based on a piece of whalebone found on a beach in Iceland’s east fjords.
